Artist¡¯s statement
Knowledge is the dominant value of every age. Knowledge is power (Michel Foucault).
It¡¯s an absurdity that the historical development of social culture is parallel with the development of violence in society. Our cultural progress has led to a heightened standard of living, but conversely it is accompanied by an increased level of violence. Contrary to the elemental form of violence, which is a unilateral violence by the dominator, the contemporary one is seemingly more tender and more concealable, neutral and objective, persuading, silently and eradicatively executed. In this sense, the art work, Yifu Ordinance Bookshop, suggests not only the cultural violence, but also the relationship between violence and culture ¡ª interaction, negotiation, suppression , dialogue, break-off, struggle and conquer.
I regard knowledge as my primary window to the observation of social change. On one hand, my acquisition of knowledge and understanding of culture comes from a western perspective. On the other, during the time I was in school, traditional Chinese culture was being notoriously criticised, deconstructed and emasculated by socialism. And even the Chinese people themselves thought of their cultural tradition as being useless and outmoded. But I consider this to be problematic, and the result may be very serious. Hence, Yifu Ordinance Bookshop tends to take the initiative in investigation and reflection on how power can be successfully overruled.
